Five tips to keep your dog cool this Summer

Five_tips_to_keep_your_dog_cool_this_summer_oliver_lifetimewithdogsSummer is here and the sun is beaming down on us. It is a fun season for humans and dogs alike. Most humans and dogs enjoy playing outside and taking advantage of the sunny, warm weather. If your dog spends a lot of time outside in the heat, or if you don’t have air conditioning inside, there are solutions to keep your dogs cool during those hot summer days.

1. Cool water

It is essential for dogs (and even for humans) to always have access to fresh, cool water on the brutally hot days of summer. Change the water regularly and keep it in the shade whenever possible. If you won’t be around to keep an eye on the water bowl, consider using an automatic water dispenser (like the Petmate Replenish Pet Waterer) to provide your dogs with a constant supply of fresh water.

2. Always have shade

Dogs may run around in the sun and enjoy sunbathing, but all dogs need a cool, shady spot to rest when they are outside for long periods of time. Trees can provide some shade, but the most ideal shade is from an actual structure (ABO Gear’s Dog Shelter).

3. Go for a swim

If your dog loves water, then this tip is for them. Kiddie pools (molded plastic, not inflatable) are great additions to the yard or porch during the summer months. Dogs can have fun and relax in the water on a hot day. Remember to change the water frequently and don’t leave it in the sun. Also, empty the pool after use so that it won’t attract mosquitoes.

4. Paw protection

Make sure to keep your dog on grass or dirt whenever possible during summer walks. Standing on asphalt or sand for too long can burn a dog’s paws. The best solution is to use dog booties (like Ultra Paws Durable Dog Boots) to protect their paws from any pain. If you have a small dog, you can put them in a doggie stroller until you reach the park or other destination.

5. Leave your dog at home

As many of us like to be outside and go places during the summer, sometimes it’s best to leave our four-legged family members at home. Don’t leave your dog in the car unless the air conditioner is running. A car can heat up to a dangerous level and kill your dog, even with the windows open. When enjoying activities that will keep you in the sun all day, leave your dog at home where there is air conditioning and no beaming sun. Your dog will be more comfortable indoors than suffering outside from the heat.

As a person who loves the summer, I enjoy taking my dogs outdoors on adventures. But I know when it is best to leave them at home if the heat will harm or affect them.

A blind dog gets his own guide dog

lucky_scruffy_border_terriers_lifetime_with_dogsLucky, a two year old border terrier was born without retinas. But Scruffy, his three year old  father is always right there in case his blind son needs some comforting. If Lucky knocks into something his father is right there to help him out of any sticky situation he may be in.

Jim Leonard, the grandfather of Chelsea who owns Lucky often looks after him. When he does, he wears bells on his pants so Lucky can always find him. Also, to keep lucky out of dangerous areas of the home he puts strong smells like lemon juice.

He said: ‘He lives life to the full. He has a great sense of smell, he can smell things from so far away, he must be compensating for having no eyes. He loves getting petted and made attention of.”

You have three dogs?

One dog is not enough, two dogs and something is still missing: three is the charm.

Left to right: Lady, Oliver, Princess

I love my pack, but let me tell you, a pack of three is three times more work than a pack of one. Feeding is one of the biggest differences when it comes to a household of multiple dogs. Instead of buying a small bag of dog food, I have to buy a big bag that lasts a about month, if that! Luckily, my dogs aren’t big dogs or they would eat a lot more food. But they do devour a lot of milk bones which they beg for every night.

With a hairy pack that doesn’t shed (since my mom has allergies), I have to groom them every few months. Yes, I do my own grooming for my pack of dogs. It saves me a lot of money since it is about sixty dollars per dog to get them groomed. Plus, it is less stress on my dogs which always makes me happy.

The two biggest downfalls of owning multiple dogs are more poop and more money. But, poop can be picked up and money can be made. My dogs come into my life and I promise them they are here to stay. Dogs rely on us to care for them and in return they make our life whole.

It is funny when I take my dogs out on walks or I am talking to someone about my dogs, the reactions I get are priceless. One lady I was talking to the other day told me she got her dog for her daughter but she could do without a dog herself. So I look down and see this calm, sweet Shih Tzu that is as happy as it can be. I thought to myself, “She should meet my pack.” I told her I had three dogs and she was in shock. I kind of looked around thinking to myself, “What is so shocking about a pack of dogs?” So, she asked me, “How do you deal with that many dogs?” I looked at her dog and smiled. Inside I was laughing because to me it’s just my normal life. I told her, “It is a little more work, but I love them and they give love back.” What can I say, I would do anything for my pack of dogs.

Meet Sunny: The Newest Obama

Sunny Obama is the newest member of the Obama family and she is a portuguese water dog just like her older brother, Bo. The White house announced the news yesterday on their website.

Even though Bo is happy to go to the children’s hospital to visit sick kids and greet guests to the white house, First Lady Michelle Obama last October did admit that Bo doesn’t get enough interaction with other dogs.

Now Bo has a full time playmate and a companion in the white house. As you can see in the video below they are getting along perfectly.

Dogs in the work place

Princess_Oliver_Lady_Lifetimewithdogs

Today is take your dog to work day. That means dogs around the country get the chance to be with their owners all day instead of watching their owners leave them behind. Neither my mother or I took our dogs to work today but if we did I think I know how they would act and what they would do.

princess_lifetimewithdogs

Princess – This girl would be so excited to go anywhere with me. When I take her on adventures with me she is the happiest dog in the world. When I am about to leave the house she gives me a look that kills. If she could talk she would say, “You leaving me??? All alone? What if you never come back?”

Now, if I worked in an office building and brought her with me she would be the best behaved out of the pack. But she would probably not let me or anyone get any work done. Why? Because she wants all the attention. She would sit on your lap and demand to get pet. Now if I forced her to stay on the floor she would probably curl up under the desk and take a nap. Once its lunch time and she will probably get up and start walking around trying to figure out who has the tastiest snack for her. Beware, she wont bark or jump on you for food but will force you to give you something with her big brown demanding eyes.

lady_lifetimewithdogs

Lady – This sweet girl would probably be nervous at first going to a work place. She would probably think its the vet’s office and she doesn’t like that place at all. But once she realizes its not a bad place she would probably warm up. She may even smile. Especially, if she smells food. Lady lives for food and her goal in life is to eat all she can. I can imagine if I brought her to work she would sneak around behind my back and look for anything she can get her mouth on. Anyone who leaves food on their desk will find it gone with Lady around. But rub Lady under her ears and neck and she will sit there and look at you with the most loving eyes.

Oliver_lifetimewithdogs

Oliver – He would be the cutest boy in the office. To any men in the office, beware he may steal your woman’s heart. Oliver would make everyone smile with his adorable face and spunky personality. Everyone would want to pet him but no one would be able to get near him. Why? Because he is pretty glued to my mother. The only way he will start trusting you is if you have food. Yes, another food lover is the family. He will do all kinds of tricks for food, Don’t try to trick him though because he is very smart. VERY SMART! So smart that you have to watch where you step because he will mark his territory on everything letting everyone know everything belongs to him. But you wont be able to get mad at him because he is blessed with the cutest face in the world.

So, I hope everyone who took their dogs to work today had fun and created some memories with them. How did your dog’s react? Did they beg for food like Lady, demand attention like Princess or create smiles like Oliver?
